Yay, recommendations!

I don't often get to recommend original work, but I really adored [personal profile] hetrez's fairytale story Outside The Sky Waits Beckoning, Beckoning which is very Le Petit Prince. It's short. Read now, or save it for a gloomy day when you're tired of being a grown-up.

I have non-Star Trek recommendations this week! Weird, huh?

Three things before the cut!

One, I was excited to discover that there's a Supernatural Kink Meme! (And unlike the Star Trek one, the 'kink' in the title still seems to fit the stories which are being posted. Ha. Let's see how long that lasts.) I am also pleased to see that they, too, are using Delicious to bookmark filled prompts, which makes it easy to find stuff fast.

Two, if you read nothing else this week, go read Jungle Kitty's Kirk and Spock Go Ice Fishing (or If My Aunt From Minnesota Wrote Fanfic). Star Trek TOS, and the funniest thing I have read all year. Seriously.

Three, since it doesn't fit in any of the categories below & I forgot to put it in with this week's Links set, Topless Robot posted a list of the 10 awesomest things Leonard Nimoy has done that aren't Star Trek. Nimoy, I heart you.

Recs: American Idol, Criminal Minds, DC-verse, Merlin, SG-1, Supernatural, Torchwood )

Recs: Star Trek: Reboot & Star Trek RPF )

Fandom, you were rocking this week! Good work!

Three-quarters of the stuff I bookmarked in my RSS feed this week looks something like this:

... which you might want to consider as fair warning that my brain's still all Trek, all the time, and this rec list will probably reflect that.

(Psst - that photo's from the FaceBook page for Small Town Saturday Night, which seems to be a new CPine movie.)

Non-Trek Stuff
Just one non-Trek rec: in the Merlin fandom, [personal profile] bitter_crimson wrote Clyster Fuck, which you are going to have to read to believe. No, seriously, you won't believe that it can possibly be good when I tell you that it's about Arthur needing Merlin to give him an enema. I know that sounds bizarre and crazy and kind of gross. But. It's. Amazing. The thing Arthur needs is terribly embarrassing to both of them and they're trying to be fine with it and nonchalant and it's not working and they've never touched each other before and Arthur's getting uncomfortably turned on and Merlin's trying to be gentle and just. NNGGH. Wow.

Star Trek owns me this week. I hope you don't mind terribly!

Trek
(all recs are Reboot 'verse, except for one, which is marked)

Two gen recs, both from the same author: [profile] _seven_crows wrote Search And Rescue, an awesome no-pairing (well, Kirk/Spock if you squint) team!fic adventure story where Jim's been kidnapped (and beaten up, and chained) and Spock & McCoy must rescue him.

She also wrote the fantastic Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy, where Kirk, Spock & McCoy are stranded in a malfunctioning shuttle.

Everything Else
In Bones fandom, [personal profile] daygloparker wrote From the Greek Paradeigma, Meaning "Example", which is hands-down my favourite Bones-decides-to-have-a-baby fic, ever. SO GOOD. Everyone's voices are spot-on, and Sweets made me laugh 'till I snorted coffee out my nose.

In the woefully-neglected Ironman fandom, [personal profile] awanderingbard wrote Firefighter, about how Pepper got the job. SO GREAT. (Pepper Potts, gen)

Recs: Merlin )

Recs: SGA )

I so totally need a Kirk/McCoy icon, and a Spock/Uhura one.

The "Star Trek Has Eaten My Brain" edition. I find ST:TOS fandom significantly more palatable when I can imagine Chris Pine instead of Shatner. Sorry Bill! The mystery left shortly after I read your bio and learned about the scene where Koko the Gorilla had you by the balls.

All I want to do is read more NewTrek fic. Anyone want to suggest people to follow or comms to read?

The quick-and-dirty, four-days-late edition.

Just one Bones rec:
[livejournal.com profile] bredalot wrote Spit in My Hand, We're Scully and Mulder: Sometimes he thinks back to his very first case with Bones as his partner and wonders what the hell he was thinking. He watches television, he loved “The X-Files,” why the hell would he compare them to Mulder and Scully? (Booth/Brennan, UST, sweetness)

Recs: Merlin & Merlin RPS )

And just one SG-1 rec:
[livejournal.com profile] sabinelagrande wrote Marie of Romania, where nothing works without Sam. (Carter/Jackson/O'Neill, R)

And lastly one SGA rec:
[livejournal.com profile] riani1 wrote Things That Shouldn't Be In A Sock Drawer, about Sasha Obama accidentally ending up on Atlantis. (Yeah. Just repeat to yourself, there is no shame in fandom, and go read it where no one else can see you.)

Recs: Merlin & Merlin RPS )

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, I found Han Solo And The Princess by Lasos -- a story about five times Han asked Leia to marry him. Leia's voice is wonderful here, spot-on and achy. (Star Wars)

In SG-1 land, [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic wrote Calibrate, where Daniel gives Jack a backrub. It's not even a sexytimes backrub, but it still made me a little... guh.

Recs: SGA )

And now I'm gonna clean out my crawl space. Which is exactly what I should be doing this beautiful spring day, I know.
merrily: Mac (Default)
Part two! Also, I've decided that if I'm only recommending one story from a fandom, I'm not gonna cut. I don't think this will be a controversial formatting decision. :-)

[livejournal.com profile] penknife asked for Iron Man Recs, and a whole slew of people responded. I haven't had a chance to go through this sea of riches yet, but the thread is here.

Recs: Merlin )

Recs: SGA )

In SPN: RPS land, [livejournal.com profile] hkath wrote If You Care To Stay, where an insane time-share arrangement leads Jenson & Jared to fall IN LUFF. Once you get over the inanity of the plot device, it's pretty awesome.

I really love this X-Files recommendation that arrived via [livejournal.com profile] crack_van: Sarken's excellent 5 Quirks Dana Scully Noticed About Fox Mulder During Their First Year As Partners. Really awesome and thoughtful and heart-wrenching.

That's it for today! Off to do laundry and figure out some new ways to turn hair metal into bluegrass.

Hey! Go over and read [livejournal.com profile] zarathuse's very first fanfic ever, the incredibly awesome Externality, in which Slash Dragon has made a Slash Sword (so obvious!) and Slash Sword makes them do it. (Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, NC-17)

(Standard PSA: In case you're new to my lj, I make these posts every Sunday. They're all tagged, for your convenience.)

This reclist, in sum:
  • My favourite new SGA author: [livejournal.com profile] sabinelagrande. Click on the SGA recs link for her freaking awesome Porn Battle entries

  • My favourite new non-fandom author: Penelope Trunk, who writes about being an artist. Links to some of her posts in the "links: misc" section

  • Office/other show vid mashups equal awesomeness

  • Possibly I should upgrade this lj account, so I can get the friends-of-friends lists. Since I'm reading the poor man's version of it, anyway.

  • Every day I finish reading my RSS feed and my flist and I get this "is that all there is?" moment of disappointment. And then on Sunday I aggregate everything and am amazed at how much time I've spent on the webs. "All there is" is A LOT. No complaints, fandom!

[livejournal.com profile] greensilver is working on a WiP where Merlin has always been a girl. I'm fascinated by it -- first, because girl!Merlin is so charming, but second, because it creates an interesting feminist reading of the text and reveals how ridiculous it is that the show's ignoring the queer subtext. (Or giving it a really long, slow burn -- anyway, the show's been slow to act on it.)

I recommend it both for the aca!fan reasons and because it's just delicious on its own, without needing to dissect it.

Spoilers for the fic, so read that first )Anyway, I love it, both because it's an excellent story and because I am glad that fandom is continuing to do the work of fandom.
