Found via 14valentines, the_drifter has an excellent post about talking to someone whose gender you don't know.

I wish someone had handed me this when I moved out of my small town and headed for the city. I mean, I had read enough to not be shocked, and good manners usually carry one through, but it is an extremely useful set of pointers.
