So after thinking hard about it for a week (having handed in my last paper ever and suddenly having hours and hours of empty time to fill), I've decided that it's time to try. I'm not getting another job. I'm going to keep working at the bookstore part-time, and I'll write full-time, and somehow, the money will stretch.

This, of course, fills me with utter panic, which is why I'm posting here instead of following my own brilliant plan.

Displacement activity - the well-loved refuge of many of us. I often make cakes. Cakes I don't even eat.

Good luck with it!

Mm, cake...

I'm reading a book of essays about living with writers, and no one mentions the displacement activities. Or, y'know, getting fat from all the cake. Odd, innit? Because I'm fairly confident that we all, to a one, do it. I mean, not necessarily cake (the last time I branded myself "full-time writer" I started darning socks), but I imagine displacement to be a universal artist malady.

As is the denial about displacement. "I'm making this cake/darning these socks because someone has to!"

Then again, I have heard of writers who get their best ideas whilst doing the washing up.
