Four things!
First,
mamoru22 made this Merlin-As-Princess-Bride vid ( found via
mklutz, whose links & recs today were, as usual, awesome):
Second, although it's already been recc'd up down and all around town, the Star Trek reboot fic So Wise We Grow by
captanddeaster is wonderful. Spock receives word that his son survived the destruction of Vulcan. Spock knows he doesn't have a son. [PLEASE NOTE: This isn't for you if discussion (oblique, but certainly text, not subtext) of Kirk's past experience as an abused child will make you uncomfortable or unwell.] (Kirk/Spock, NC-17, kid!fic, novel-length)
Third, Sue (
30toseoul) has been posting excellent compilations of her favourite
fandomsecrets contributions. Her journal is flocked, but she friends back most everyone. You can see her fandomsecrets compilations here: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
And lastly -- in case you missed the fandom wank of the week -- there was, briefly, an lj comm devoted to kink-free fic:
kinkfreezone.
It was founded in February this year.
thingswithwings stumbled upon it recently, posted about the mod's list of what wasn't allowed, the eyes of the internet came to bear, and then something exploded.
Let me say, to begin with, that I am sympathetic to the intention of the founders of this comm. Sure, I'd be happy if all the fic I read had someone tied up (at least for part of the story), but then again, I had to unsubscribe from the STXI Kink Meme Delicious feed because I couldn't handle reading the incest requests. Swimming in the fandom kink pool means occasionally getting in over your head. And having people pee in the pool. Sometimes, you just don't want to swim in pee.
The big problem with
kinkfreezone -- the cause of the burst of argument, followed by wank -- was how the comm was defined: the mod made a list of "kinks" which were unacceptable.
(To make it even more problematic, the list was taken, verbatim, from
eliade's celebratory list of fandom kinks and cliches. See the discussion of that here.)
When other people looked at that list, they were derisive (and/or found it hilarious), because the mod didn't seem to get that it's possible to enjoy a sexual aspect without fetishizing it. (That is, either
forcryinoutloud didn't get it, or she didn't realize that she really needed to clarify the "not allowed" post.) In addition, by labeling things like transgender mentions and dildos "kinky", the "not allowed" post seemed to suggest that the comm was there primarily to host fic with heteronormative sex ... or fic with cuddling. (Fully clothed cuddling.)
Anyway. Comments were posted. The mod got angry. The comm got more traffic than it had in its whole 9 month life, and then it was deleted.
AND THEN people started trying to write fic based on the comm's requirements. (God, fandom, I love you.)
IN SUM, I told you all of this to recommend that you go read: a)comment!fic by
daegaer here; comment!fic by
runpunkrun here and then, on the actually not silly front, b)
thingswithwings' fic, A Beginner's Guide to Vulcan Sexual Practice, by Captain James T. Kirk. There's also a totally fantastic kink-free bingo card at the end of the last one, too.
IN SUM: being in fandom is never ever boring. Also, Merlin is pretty and one of the scriptwriters needs to make him say "as you wish" SOON.
