Star Trek! YAY!
First, the pretty! MY GOD THE PRETTY. Chris Pine: I'm... kind of without words. (For explanation of my speechlessness, please take a look at this) And Zach Quinto! Is he, like, made from pure awesome, molded into the shape of a human? Those eyes! And the way they look at Kirk! OH GOD. Also, Zoe Saldana! GEEZ. (I'm now going to go back and reread the "Kirk imagines Spock/Uhura" fic, because MY GOD ZOE SALDANA.)
ETA: I didn't bookmark it! *slaps self* Send help! I mean, fic!
*pant, pant; rehydrates*
And the action! And the total craziness that yet, in the world of Star Trek, can be explained by TIME TRAVEL FUCKS EVERYTHING UP. (Which is handwavy, and yet not at all handwavy, because yes, yes it does.)
AND THE SPACE FIGHTS! Best since Mal engineered Reavers Vs. Alliance!

... the only little thing that I am not feeling so great about is, um, where are the girls? (ETA: I ask this question knowing full well that canon provides a dearth of girls!) If time travel fucks everything up, then can't it be different this time and maybe, you know, meet the Bechdel rule? I mean, Uhura was awesome, and they tried hard to establish her as smart and resourceful and head of her class... except for the part where she intercepted a crucial transmission and then didn't tell anyone but her roommate, but since Kirk overheard it, he got to save the day. WTF, Uhura! And then her role is to give Spock what he needs! LIKE, NOT EVEN SUBTLEY. SHE ASKS HIM WHAT HE NEEDS.
And the only other girls who gets to talk are a) the moms, Kirk's only when she's giving birth to him, and b) the roommate, who is apparently the academybicycle female equivalent of Kirk (ETA: Which is fine! I support sex-positive women, green or otherwise! But that's all she gets to do... oh yeah, that, and die), and only talks long enough to 1) establish Kirk's heterosexuality and 2) prompt Uhura to tell her the all-important deets about the transmission she overheard, so that Kirk can hear about it.
I'm a bit pissed about this part. Can someone please put girls in space in a way where they get to be agents of change and shapers of destiny? WE LIKE IT IN SPACE. WE'VE GOT SKILLZ.
I find myself thinking wistfully of Kaylee & River & Zoe.
Kate found her own fic for me! The one I meant was Observe, where Kirk imagines Spock/Uhura, 'cause, damn.
This is where I got the title for this post. Curse you, Ryan North, with your awesome t-shirts that end up discontinued before I manage to buy them!
