Oct. 28th, 2009 04:29 pmFlist & Circle (particularly those of you in the US), same-sex marriage advocates in Maine need your help. A law making same-sex marriage legal has been wending its way through the process, and now there's a confusingly-worded citizen vote on it.
sotto_voice has a post outlining the situation here, with links to other resources.
Do what you can! Even if that's just reblogging it. Prop 8 was a disaster; this doesn't have to be.

Date: 2009-10-29 12:29 am (UTC)For some background for anybody reading, what happened was that the Maine state legislature passed a law legalizing gay marriage back in April or May, but Maine has a people's referendum process and opponents gathered enough dissenting signatures to put the issue on the ballot, hoping for a people's veto, in November. So what we're doing now is trying to defeat a public veto of LD1020, which is the law that legalized gay marriage.
We need all the help and all the exposure we can get; the campaign has been very big news here, but I've heard it's very much under the radar on a national/international level. Despite the fact that Maine is tiny, this is a big-ass deal; it's the first time that gay marriage has been put before a public vote in the United States.
(Wow, I have no appropriate icons for this situation on this account...)
