I just handed out awards to highschool students who won a poetry contest!
Although I was inspired to think snarky things -- even the best highschool poetry can't avoid the emo, it seems -- the kids were just so excited and happy that I can't write them down. They were awesome and I am not going to be mean.
Also, one of the featured (non-highschool) poets who read made me want to claw out my ears, so I'm feeling somewhat fond towards the 16 year olds with berets.
I have a new category! I read a lot of news stories this week about people being heroic, courageous or just down right gosh darn awesome, so they get their own section.

Beards: now for the ladies!
God, I wish I'd thought of this hallowe'en costume. And when I have kids, I am totally making them trick-or-treat as Mario & Luigi. [Neatorama, BoingBoing]
I might not have a Google Wave invite yet, but that doesn't mean I can't learn in exhaustive detail how to use it. [LifeHacker]
If you've got some spare time, you could take one of the 1900 free courses offered by MIT on their Open Learning website.

Can we have a round of applause for Police Sergeant Kimberly Munley? She (probably) brought down the Fort Hood gunman... by running towards him while he was shooting at her. Seriously, jaw still dropped. (Also, a round of applause for the people who developed her training course.)
Chiune Sugihara is the most awesome person you've never heard about. In 1940, over 29 days, as an ambassador to Lithuania, he defied the Japanese ministry by issuing enough visas to get 6000 Jews out of German-occupied Poland and away to safety. [Mental Floss]
So, I hear it's not a good idea, if you live in Iran, to criticize your supreme leader -- 'cause you might be, well, killed. Mahmoud Vahidnia, student, does it anyway. To Khamenei's face. I think he deserves our admiration. He also deserves a visa to get out of the country. [Huffington Post]

The female bears at the zoo in Leipzig, Germany, have gone bald. Vets are baffled. I am worried. Bare bears! They look wrong. [The Daily Mail]
Sloths are my favourite. [Cute Overload]
Will the Duggars inherit the earth? OH GOD. The indomitably awesome Maggie Koerth-Bakker, over at BoingBoing, saw an Onion AV article suggesting that by 2100, everyone would be part Duggar, and decided to call in a statistician to check it out.[BoingBoing]

It's the last line that really makes this customer story. [Not Always Right]
I like design with form that's tied to function. [The Design Blog]
If this was my car, I would never wash it. (I dunno where this came from? It showed up in my Google RSS feed.)
A blog of bank robbery notes! Accompanied by pictures of the robbers who wrote the notes, for extra creepiness.
Do you know where they should really build a scale replica of an English church? The top floor of an Osaka skyscraper, obvs. [BoingBoing]

Scroll down for the really unfortunate part of this Twilight tie-in. Also, maybe I should apologize in advance? [Bookshelves of Doom]

Remember that NCIS fanfic where Gibbs was a centaur? Not the kind of thing open to an SNL crossover remix... OR IS IT?
Know any nerd guys of the straight persuasion? Here, I give you the power to blow their minds. [BoingBoing]

Poor hairless bears. :(
I would never wash that car either. Epic display!
The bank notes blog is really creepy. But also fascinating. I'm gonna make a DW feed for it.
