Outside of the cut, here's why you should add Nerd Boyfriend to your RSS feed:

Onto this week's stuff!

Links: Happy-making Vids
You know who I love? Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton + Disney characters makes no sense, but this vid is still awesome. (If the embed isn't working, you can watch it here.)

Also awesome: Polly Darton. (If the embed isn't working, you can watch it here.)

Still with the awesome: C'etait un Rendez vous, a short film of a crazy, highspeed drive through the very early morning streets of Paris. I know a highly-caffeinated, dangerously beautiful Parisian man who drives like this, although he never mounted a kerb with me in the car. (Kr's! I miss you!) (The vid is here on YouTube if you can't see the embed.)

You know who sucks? Predatory tow truck companies. You know what's awesome? Getting back at them! (Vid here if you can't see embeds.) [Found via BoingBoing]

This is the cutest wind-up toy I've ever seen. A bear! Polishing his spectacles!

The Consumerist posted a roundup of posts on making, serving and preserving your own ice cream. Ice cream! Nom nom nom nom nom. (I have nothing useful to say about ice cream, besides "it is good" and "I like to eat it".)

Do you, like me, adore the street fashion blog The Sartorialist? Ever have a day where you think, hey, this outfit is awesome and deserving of attention? Here's a guide to getting yourself on Scott Schuman's radar, in handy flowchart form.

The Pirate Party has come to Canada! On my to-do list for next week: sign up. (No, not really.)

Feeling blocked? The 3 Day Novel Writing Contest, which runs over the Labour Day weekend, is taking registrations. My experience is that the first prize, getting published, isn't a particularly good prize -- in my ten years as a bookseller, no one has ever requested one of the winners, and they've never been on the best-seller list -- but having a looming deadline and getting a first draft hammered out quickly is reason enough to sign up.

These purses made from old books are fabulous, and I'm pretty sure that making them yourself would be pretty easy.

Someone found a daguerreotype which is probably of Phineas Gage, the guy who had an iron bar go through his frontal lobe but yet survived, thus giving neuroscience an unbelievable kick in the pants. This is the only image of him in existence. (He turned into a jerk after the iron bar pierced his noggin, btw. Frontal lobes: they are there for a reason.)

Someone taught a computer sign language! Next step: giving computers hands. (Also posted here on BoingBoing if you can't see the embed.)

A friend of mine has started a blog where she posts random pictures she likes. I particularly loved this one this week, which is an example of truly fabulous typographic design.

This is probs what would happen if I reproduced.

In 1985, Ebony Magazine posted a "what they'll look like in the year 2000" photospread. This is their take on Y2K MJ, a smooth looking man who bears no resemblance to actual Y2K MJ. To be fair, who could have predicted all the nose surgeries?

This is the neatest business card I've ever seen. Good design can be unbelievably awesome, you know that? [I Believe In Advertising]

Vague Science, the magazine isn't real, although you wouldn't know it from half of my conversations.

I can think of good uses for these 20th Century warning signs, not least of which is "post them around the Torchwood headquarters".

This Speech Bubble bookshelf is quirky and fabulous and I want one. [Apartment Therapy]

And I could probably build this counter made of books from my discards right now. It'll have to wait until I open my own bookstore, though. [Apartment Therapy]

Needlepoint Jane Austen covers are so geek chic awesome, I can hardly stand it. I can't figure out who the publisher is from the imprint logo, though, which is too bad, because I need to a)own these and b)stock them at my bookstore. Does anyone recognize that symbol? [personal profile] bathsweaver?

This spaghetti measurer looks like a very handy thing to have around.

One of the tumblr accounts seems to have gotten access to Pine family photos, and they are putting up things like this. I applaud you, FuckYeahChrisPine! I also assume you are restraining yourself and only putting up the non-invasive ones! PLS TO BE SHOWING US BB PINE IN A BB BATHTUB KTHNX!

Some enterprising soul at the Pinto tumblr (ha, enterprising. ha), frustrated by the lack of material, has put together a bunch of fabulous manips. This one is my favourite, but this, this and this are excellent also. I am not all that certain what the point of this one is. Captain Kirk goes to 711?

It turns out Raymond Chandler had a cameo in Double Indemnity, and no one noticed for 65 years! The Easter Egg to end all Easter Eggs! [LA Times]

Apparently the Ace of Cakes S7 premiere will feature a Serenity cake! (There's no image or mention of it in the trailer, don't be disappointed.)

In case you didn't see it when [personal profile] sheafrotherdon linked, here are pictures of Rachel Luttrell & Jason Momoa sharing clothes, being generally adorable at the Shore Leave con.

Fiction recommendations a-comin'!

Yes, I love that blog. He has a wonderful eye.

We are super excited for the Serenity cake. If I ever have a grand to waste I am having them make the Blue Beetle's Bug into a cake.
