ETA: I first posted this on April 12, 2006. When I revisited this post today (June 20, 2009), there were a lot of pieces I couldn't find replacement links for. Obviously, a lot of people have left the fandom - including me, and musesfool who wrote the original list I was working from.

In addition, the SlashCity website, which hosted a lot of fanwriters, has shut down, and the personal (ie non LJ) sites of many writers have expired or changed. rageprufrock has moved glitterati to Talk On Corners (here), mousapelli has moved the Rat Box to Kira Kira (here); copperbadge (aka sam_storyteller) got hacked last year and when he recovered control, both of his ljs had to be rebuilt from scratch.

Also, we've now got the bookmarking site Delicious, which is a huge improvement on both the LJ memory feature, posted reclists and personal, on-browser bookmarking.

So, I feel no urge to do much more maintenance on this list, or to go over to musesfool's original one again to figure out which stories are unfindable and try to track them down.

I'm done with this one, kiddos.

It's a good object lesson, though: the internet, for all the usefulness of The Wayback Machine and the weird Japanese mirror sites, is impermanent. Save the fanfic you like to disk, and print them out. I've never made a habit of that, but now I think I'm going to.
